Bush taps ex-Va. Lt. Gov. Hager for post

WASHINGTON, May 24 (UPI) -- President Bush intends to name former Virginia Lt. Gov. John Hager to a senior post in the U.S. Department of Education, the White House said Monday.

A former tobacco company executive and former, Hager will reportedly become the department's next assistant secretary of education for special education and rehabilitative services.

A near-fatal bout with polio while a young man left Hager confined to a wheelchair. After leaving office in 2001, he was selected by incoming Gov. Mark Warner as the first coordinator of the commonwealth's homeland security efforts.
