U.S. soldier killed, 3 injured in Iraq

BAGHDAD, May 22 (UPI) -- One U.S. soldier was killed and three others were wounded Saturday in a suicide bomb attack on their military patrol south of Baghdad.

An American military spokesman said the casualties occurred when a booby-trapped car slammed into a tank carrying a number of soldiers near the town of Hammoudiya, about 20 miles (30 kilometers) south of Baghdad.

Officials said, in another incident, the municipal chief of Diala province, Hisham Ata Shehada, escaped assassination Saturday when an explosive device detonated near his convoy in the town of Baaqouba.

Police sources said Shehadeh was unharmed, but two of his aides were injured, Another bomb exploded in the same area near a police patrol, injuring two Iraqi policemen.

Earlier Saturday Iraq's deputy interior minister, Gen. Abdul Jabbar Yousef, along with his family were injured in a suicide attack on his Baghdad home. Yousef and his family were being treated at an area hospital.

The suicide attack killed six people and injured at least 10 others, including women and children, living next door to the ministry official.
