U.N.: Another deadly N. Uganda rebel raid

UNITED NATIONS, May 21 (UPI) -- The United Nations said Friday 41 people were killed and 7,000 others displaced in another rebel attack on a northern Uganda refugee camp.

The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said some 200 homes were razed in the attack on already internally displaced people at the Lukodi camp about 7 miles from Gulu. The number of injured and abducted were not known.

"These attacks against some of the most vulnerable civilians in the world are an outrage," U.N. Emergency Relief Coordinator Jan Egeland said. "In many cases, the victims have fled attack after attack, desperate for safety. I condemn these attacks in the strongest terms and call on the Lord's Resistance Army to stop all abuses against civilians immediately."

OCHA members will join an assessment team from other U.N. agencies, humanitarian non-governmental organizations and the Ugandan Government in going to Lukodi as soon as security conditions improve.

Sources said the rebels attacked Pagak camp Sunday and clubbed to death 39 people, mainly women and children, OCHA said. More than 3,000 people fled that camp. At least 190 people were murdered in Odek village last month and in Barlonyo village in February.
