Chalabi's followers demonstrate in Baghdad

BAGHDAD, May 21 (UPI) -- Followers of Ahmed Chalabi, head of the Iraqi National Congress, demonstrated in Baghdad Friday to protest against raids on the group's offices.

About 200 protesters raised banners denouncing the Thursday raid by Iraqi police and U.S. troops.

Police also surrounded Chalabi's house but did not to enter.

The Shiite leader's partisans denounced attempts to rehire former Baathists in the public administration, warning of sectarian conflicts such an approach might trigger.

Chalabi, initially pro-American, said Thursday he has cut his relations with the Coalition Provisional Authority completely and encouraged rebellious Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr not to surrender to U.S. troops fighting his al-Mehdi Army.

He is accused of giving the Pentagon false information about the situation in pre-war Iraq.
