PORTLAND, Ore., May 20 (UPI) -- Federal authorities Thursday released an Oregon man whose fingerprints were thought to have been found on evidence connected to the Madrid train bombings.
Brandon Mayfield, 37, of Portland, was arrested May 6 after Spanish authorities said they found his fingerprint on a bag containing detonators like those used in the March 11 commuter train bombings that killed 191 people. He was held on a material witness warrant. No formal charges were ever filed.
However, Spanish police determined Thursday that the fingerprint actually belonged to an Algerian national. Eight points on the print had matched Mayfield's, KATU-TV, Portland, reported.
It was unclear, however, whether the investigation of Mayfield had been dropped, KGW-TV, Portland, reported.
