86-year-old man charged in wife killing

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, May 19 (UPI) -- An 86-year-old man in Winnipeg, Canada, faces a second-degree murder charge in the stabbing death of his ailing 83-year-old wife.

Tony Jaworski is alleged to have stabbed his wife Sophie May 8 as she slept in a hospital, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Wednesday.

Friends said she had both terminal colon cancer and Alzheimer's disease.

Police said Jaworski stabbed himself in the abdomen after the attack. He was charged after being released from the hospital Monday.

Police would not release a motive for the killing but media reports speculated it was a mercy killing. The couple had been married for 60 years.
