BEIRUT, Lebanon, May 18 (UPI) -- Lebanese security reportedly uncovered a network recruited by Israeli intelligence to assassinate Hezbollah chief Sheik Hassan Nasrallah.
Beirut's As-Safir newspaper quoted "informed sources" Tuesday identifying the leader of the network as a Palestinian woman in a refugee camp in north Lebanon. She was reportedly recruited by agents working in Israel's trade office in Tunisia.
The network also planned to kill Palestinian leaders based in Lebanon, the newspaper said.
Israel, which assassinated two Hamas leaders in Gaza a month ago, recently revealed Nasrallah was on its hit list.
The sources said Jamal Zaaroura was asked by the Israeli intelligence to recruit non-Lebanese, mainly Arab nationals in Lebanon, to monitor Beirut's southern suburbs where Hezbollah's main offices are located.
Zaaroura reportedly told investigators the plan to kill Nasrallah involved powerful explosives and chemical materials. The sources said Zaaroura was romantically involved with the man who tipped off police, leading to her arrest last week.
