Argentina to Chile: Gas still limited

BUENOS AIRES, May 18 (UPI) -- Argentina will continue to limit supplies of natural gas to neighboring Chile due to its ongoing energy crisis, local news sources reported Tuesday.

Clarin newspaper reported Argentine Minister of Interior Anibal Fernandez defended his nation's decision to limit natural gas supply to Chile and admitted that there is no end in sight to the crisis.

Fernandez was addressing his fellow regional leaders in Chile during a meeting sponsored by Mecosur, a regional trade bloc comprised of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.

Argentina cut gas supplies to Chile by 20 percent in April due to the increasing demand at home while the nation emerges for years of economic recession.

Chile is concerned that power rationing may be the only solution though an uncomfortable one, particularly as winter approaches in the southern hemisphere.
