BERLIN, May 17 (UPI) -- The U.S. national security advisor told the Palestinian prime minister that a unilateral Israeli withdrawal from Gaza was an opportunity for progress.
"We happen to believe there's nothing wrong with unilateral steps, in the right direction," Condoleeza Rice said Monday after her meeting with Ahmed Qureia in Berlin. "Not everything in the world needs to be negotiated."
Qureia, who has not met Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon since assuming office last November, said an organized Israeli withdrawal "must be welcomed" as long as it is done within the framework of the so-called roadmap, the BBC reported.
The roadmap calls for a series of confidence building measures that would lead to the creation of an independent Palestinian state.
Qureia appealed to Rice to stop Israeli plans to widen a corridor it has in the Gaza Strip along the border with Egypt. The plan would entail numerous house demolitions rendering thousands of Palestinians homeless, he said.
