Gandhi chosen to lead India parliament

NEW DELHI, May 15 (UPI) -- Sonia Gandhi has been chosen by India's Congress Party as its leader in parliament, clearing the way to become the next prime minister.

India's opposition Congress Party shocked the 22-party ruling alliance by winning the federal elections. Congress Party leaders are holding consultations with allies and Leftist groups to seek support to form the new government.

However, Italian-born Gandhi has not said if she wants to be the next prime minister.

Gandhi, whose election was unanimous, was mobbed by MPs and showered with flowers when she arrived at the parliamentary building minutes after the vote, the BBC said.

She told the crowd: "We are all aware that we have an enormous task ahead of us. The way ahead is fraught with difficulties. Let us therefore not be complacent."

She said a coalition government led by her party will be in place very soon, to the thumping of desks by the jubilant party MPs, the Times of India reported.
