NEW YORK, May 13 (UPI) -- The 19-year-old intern who had accused New York Assemblyman Adam Clayton Powell IV, of rape has recanted, the New York Daily News reported.

She now "says the sex was consensual," the News said Wednesday.

In a written statement to detectives investigating the matter in the Albany, N.Y., suburb of Colonie, the unidentified woman said that Powell, "didn't rape me." She described, the News said, "her romp with the Democrat lawmaker in graphic detail, and said she only accused Powell ... at the urging of her 28-year-old boyfriend."

"If it wasn't for (my boyfriend) getting involved by contacting the Albany police or by speaking to my parents, I would have never reported Adam for rape," she said.

Powell, the son of legendary U.S. Democratic congressman from Newyork, Adam Clayton Powell Jr. by his third wife, has made no public comment on the matter.

Police in Colonie say they are still looking into the matter.
