Mistrial denied in antifreeze poison trial

ATLANTA, May 13 (UPI) -- A judge denied a motion for a mistrial Thursday in the case of an Atlanta area woman charged with poisoning her husband with antifreeze.

The mistrial was requested by the defense on grounds that special prosecutor James Mallard said in open court he planned to charge the defendant in a second murder, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Lynn Turner, 35, is on trial for the 1995 murder of her husband, Maurice Glenn Turner, 31, a Cobb County police officer.

Turner, a former Cobb County 911 operator, is also a suspect in the death of fireman Randy Thompson six years later, but has not been charged.

Mallard said in the presence of the jury he planned to seek an indictment in that case, which also involved ethylene glycol -- a sweet odorless chemical in antifreeze.

Cobb County Superior Court Judge James Bodiford said the comments by Mallard would not unduly sway the jury.
