L.A. judge throws out priest's libel suit

LOS ANGELES, May 13 (UPI) -- A Los Angeles Catholic priest's libel suit against a sexual victim's advocacy group was dismissed for insufficient evidence, the Los Angeles Times said.

The suit was filed in February by Monsignor Joseph Alzugaray against the Survivors Network for those Abused by Priests, his female accuser and her lawyer.

Alzugaray said allegations against him printed in leaflets and on a Web site exposed him "to hatred, humiliation, contempt, ridicule and obloquy." He said he "suffered damage to his occupation and career advancement, severe loss of his personal and professional reputation, severe mental anguish and ... public scorn."

But Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Jon Mayeda threw out the case against SNAP Wednesday, ruling "there is insufficient evidence to refute the truthfulness of the defendant's statements."

Alzugaray has since left Los Angeles and is now pastor of a church in Napa.
