Travel warning issued for Yemen, Burundi

WASHINGTON, May 11 (UPI) -- The United States issued two travel warnings Tuesday evening, advising citizens of the risks involved in traveling to Yemen and Burundi.

"The security threat to all U.S. citizens in Yemen remains high due to continuing efforts by al-Qaida to re-constitute an effective operating base," the State Department said.

The warning cites the possibility of attacks by extremist on U.S. citizens, facilities, businesses and perceived interests.

"U.S. citizens in Yemen should exercise caution and take prudent measures to maintain their security," the warning said. "Maintain a high level of vigilance, avoid crowds and demonstrations, keep a low profile, vary times and routes for all travel, and ensure travel documents are current."

Americans who believe they are being followed or threatened while driving in urban centers are advised to immediately seek police assistance.

In a separate warning for Burundi, the department urged Americans to exercise caution while traveling to that country because of a civil war that started in 1993.
