S.Korea court to rule on impeachment trial

SEOUL, May 11 (UPI) -- South Korea's Constitutional Court will rule on whether to oust or reinstate impeached President Roh Moo-hyun on Friday, court officials said Tuesday.

In a session Tuesday, the nine-judge court decided to announce the final verdict on the country's unprecedented presidential impeachment trial at 10 a.m. on May 14, the court said. The court has also decided to allow live broadcasting of the historic ruling.

Court spokesman Chun Jong-ik said judges were fine-tuning their verdict. If six of the nine justices vote in favor of impeachment, Roh will be immediately unseated and a special presidential election will be called to select his successor within 60 days.

If more than three judges vote against the impeachment, Roh's executive powers will be restored.

Roh's powers have been suspended since the opposition-dominated National Assembly impeached him on March 12 on charges of illegal electioneering and incompetence. Roh is the first South Korean president to be impeached by the parliament.
