Military probes Afghan abuse claim

KABUL, Afghanistan, May 11 (UPI) -- The U.S. military in Afghanistan has launched an inquiry into the alleged mistreatment of an Afghan police officer, the U.S. Embassy in Kabul said Tuesday.

An unidentified Afghan police officer earlier complained he was held by coalition forces at U.S. military facilities in Afghanistan in August 2003.

During his confinement near the city of Gardez and at the Bagram airbase near Kabul, he was physically and mentally abused, the officer said.

He said he was "striped naked, photographed while naked, kicked and subjected to sexual taunting."

"To the best of our knowledge this is the first time anyone in the military chain of command or the United States Embassy has heard of this alleged mistreatment," said U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad. "We are not aware of the existence of any photos of the alleged incident. "

Ambassador Khalilzad said he was confident the U.S. military's investigation will be thorough, will determine the truth of the allegations and if they are true, appropriate action will be taken.
