CANBERRA, Australia, May 9 (UPI) -- Australia's Olympic athletes will have armed guards protecting them 24 hours a day during the August games, the Melbourne Herald Sun reported Sunday.
Greek police officers will act as armed escorts to shadow athletes when they leave the Olympic village to go shopping or sightseeing.
Authorities in Greece promised extra security after deciding Australian police officers would not be allowed to carry guns in Athens.
The Australian Olympic Committee said Saturday it was considering sending its own security force to Athens unless it received guarantees from the Greek government.
"We may have to look to secure some security ourselves," Australian Olympic Committee president John Coates said.
