Moroccan suspected in Madrid bombings

MADRID, May 8 (UPI) -- Spanish officials said Saturday police arrested a Moroccan man as part of the investigation into the deadly March 11 Madrid train bombings.

The Interior Ministry said the unidentified man was taken into custody in a suburb of the Spanish capital, the Voice of America reported Saturday. The man's phone number was found in the apartment where seven suspects blew themselves up last month as police closed in on them.

Eighteen people have been charged in the blasts, which killed 191 people and injured 2,000. Spanish authorities say Islamic extremists possibly connected to al-Qaida carried out the attacks. On Thursday, U.S. officials in Oregon took an American into custody as a material witness in the investigation.

Officials say they linked the man, Brandon Mayfield, to a fingerprint on a bag of detonators found in Spain after the blast.
