Pro-Palestinian party to fight French poll

BRUSSELS, May 7 (UPI) -- A pro-Palestinian political party will field up to three candidates in next month's European Parliament elections in France.

The new 'Euro-Palestine' grouping aims to turn widespread unease at the policies of Israel Premier Ariel Sharon into support at the ballot box.

"Peace in Palestine is our concern", Christophe Oberlin, the party's founder, told French daily 'Liberation.'

"Sixty percent of Europeans think that Israel is the greatest threat to world peace", he added referring to a controversial recent EU poll.

The Israeli government recently claimed that almost half the attacks on Jews in Europe occur in France. But historian and 'Europe-Palestine' supporter Maurice Rajsfus said it was "The state of Israel, as it has functioned since 1967, that stirs new anti-Semitism."
