Koreas agree to hold military talks

SEOUL, May 7 (UPI) -- North and South Korea agreed Friday to hold high-level military talks to discuss tension reduction across their heavily armed border, officials said.

The agreement came shortly after the two sides ended high-level talks in Pyongyang without a breakthrough on the military issues.

"The two sides agreed to hold military officials talks, and that they will continue discussions on issues raised by both sides," the revised statement said. The earlier statement just said they would meet again on August 3 in Seoul.

The four-day Cabinet-level talks ended Friday morning with no breakthrough on Seoul's proposed military talks. But just after the end of the talks, the North informed South Korean delegates of its decision to accept the defense talks proposal.

The North's negotiators had earlier rejected the proposal, calling for the South to scrap its annual joint military exercises with the United States. South Koreans defended the war games as "defense-oriented."

Seoul officials said the inter-Korean military talks may take place in May.
