Officials in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, said a large group of Pakistani pilgrims were present in Najaf when U.S. soldiers raided the city. Four busses that had brought the pilgrims to the site were also destroyed.

U.S. armored units moved into the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala Thursday, fending off counterattacks by a militia loyal to the radical cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.

The U.S. troops seized the governor's house in Najaf and installed a new governor, Adnan al-Zurufi.

The United States is determined to take back Najaf from Sadr's forces that captured the city a month ago.
