Deadbeat dads given choice of vasectomy

NEWPORT, Ky., May 7 (UPI) -- A family court judge in northern Kentucky is giving fathers behind on child support the choice of going to jail or getting a vasectomy.

Judge D. Michael Foellger has never ordered any defendant to undergo the surgery, but he has given the option to several men who have more than four children and owe more than $10,000 in child support. It was also reported that Foellger advised one woman, who had her eighth child taken away because of neglect, to have a tubal ligation.

Foellger told the Kentucky Post: "If these children are in poverty because these guys are not paying their child support, I have no qualms about it. I don't think these men deserve to have any more children."

The newspaper said over the last 17 months, Foellger has given the vasectomy-or-jail option at least six times. One man chose a 30-day jail sentence while two men reported back with notes from doctors stating a vasectomy has been done. Some others are reportedly seeking to have a vasectomy.
