OSLO, Norway, May 6 (UPI) -- Norway's transport strike forced Prior Norge, the country's leading egg producer, to destroy 340,000 still edible eggs Thursday.
Prior's Oslo warehouse holds about 800 tons of eggs worth about $3.7 million, Norway's Aftenposten newspaper reported Thursday. About 100 tons of fresh eggs arrive every day but now there is no way to deliver many of them.
"This is a sad day for Prior. This is the first time we throw out food like this but the eggs are unfortunately nearing their sell-by date and we have no choice but to destroy them," said director Leif Jorstad.
Eggs and toilet paper are the two most high-profile goods that have been hit by the transport strike. However, Norway's Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Erna Solberg, has said she will not force the parties into negotiation until the strike causes shortages of diapers and infant formula, which she said would be a health risk.
