TOKYO, May 5 (UPI) -- Japan and North Korea ended two days of intergovernmental talks on the abduction issue Wednesday in Beijing.

Mitoji Yabunaka, director general of the Japanese Foreign Ministry's Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau, said, "We held considerably in-depth discussions."

His comments suggested Japan and North Korea may have talked about ideas to implement the handover of the families of five repatriated Japanese abductees, which is the largest pending issue between Tokyo and Pyongyang, Kyodo News Service reported.

However, Yabunaka said that they did not come to any agreements other than to continue the talks.

Japan has expressed its intention to resume normalization talks with the North if the eight family members of the returnees can come to Japan, Kyodo said.
