WASHINGTON, May 4 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army has issued reprimands and an admonishment to seven officers for the abuse of inmates at a Baghdad prison, the New York Times said.
The officers and non-commissioned officers were not demoted or discharged. They have not been charged with crimes, although six subordinates accused of carrying out the abuse already face criminal charges, the Times said Tuesday.
President George Bush called Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld Monday "to make sure that appropriate action was being taken against those responsible for these shameful, appalling acts," said White House spokesman Scott McClellan.
The military's investigative report into abuses of detainees in Iraq by Maj. Gen. Antonio Taguba, described problems in the prison system and flaws in the leadership, training and morale of the military police at the Abu Ghraib facility in Baghdad and elsewhere.
The report found that after several detainees were beaten in May 2003 at another facility called Camp Bucca, nothing was done to make clear to the military police elsewhere that such actions were not to be tolerated.
