Survey: Most won't see Mom Sunday

SAN FRANCISCO, May 3 (UPI) -- Fewer than half of Americans who live away from mom plan to see her on Mother's Day, according to a survey by Hotwire.com and Harris Interactive.

Only 48 percent of the poll's 2,288 respondents who lived far from their mothers said they plan a visit in person Sunday. Slightly more than half (51 percent) who live 150 miles or more from their moms said they see her at least one every six months.

Fifty-five percent who live more than 150 miles away said they would visit their mothers more often if cheap airfares were available.

"It's clear that traveling to see mom and other loved ones is important to Americans," said Cheryl Law, senior director of consumer research of Hotwire, a discount travel Web site founded in 2000.

The nationwide survey of Americans 18 and over was conducted April 22-26 and had a 5 percent margin of error.
