Hill Democrats offering immigration plan

WASHINGTON, May 3 (UPI) -- In a response to a more limited White House proposal, congressional Democrats Tuesday are unveiling a plan for extensive U.S. immigration reform.

The broad reform bill is sponsored by Sen. Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts along with Reps. Robert Menendez of New Jersey and Luis V. Gutierrez of Illinois and would provide a way for millions of undocumented workers in the United States to gain legal status.

In addition, the proposal aims to make it easier for new immigrants to enter the United States to find work.

While the move has little chance of moving forward, particularly in an election year, the legislation is a clear attempt by progressive Democrats to reach out to the growing block of Hispanic voters in the United States, who are considered a key voting block by both parties in coming elections.
