Jenkins, a philosopher, top administrator, former trustee and graduate of Notre Dame, will be the third president of the national Catholic institution in the past half-century.

After announcing Malloy's planned resignation, the board of trustees named Jenkins to a five-year term -- a position overseeing a nationally top-rated academic university with one of the nation's largest endowments.
