GAZA, May 1 (UPI) -- Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat urged the envoys to the international Quartet committee to help revive the stalled Middle East peace process.

The envoys of the Quartet - the European Union, the United States, the United Nations and Russia - will meet in New York on Tuesday to discuss the peace process.

Nabil Abu Rudeineh, a top aide to Arafat, told UPI on Saturday that Arafat has addressed letters to the Quartet urging it to activate the "Roadmap" plan for peace in the Middle East.

"President Arafat called upon the Quartet in written letters he addressed to the meeting not to let Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon escape from implementing the Roadmap plan," said Abu Rudeineh.

He said that the Israeli pullout from Gaza Strip "could never be enough," adding, "there must be an activation of U.S. President's George W. Bush vision of two states, one Israeli and one Palestinian."

"These meetings should be a new breakthrough in order to push forward the stalled peace process and implement the roadmap peace plan," said Abu Rudeineh.
