ILAVE, Peru, April 28 (UPI) -- Peruvian police returned to the southern city of Ilave to wrest control from protesters who earlier this week lynched the mayor.
According to El Comerico newspaper Wednesday, more than 200 police were sent to Ilave -- near the shores of Lake Titicaca -- to restore order where people have protested for weeks about local corruption.
On Monday, police were forced to evacuate their headquarters when protesters lobbed flaming Molotov cocktails at their headquarters. In addition to attacking the station, protesters dragged Mayor Cirilo Fernando Robles Cayomamani -- accused of embezzling state funds -- into the streets where he was beaten, then reportedly hung.
While Peru's interior ministry said it would slowly return order to Ilave, President Alejandro Toledo promised once order is restored those responsible for the violence would be punished.
