Damascus blasts condemned

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, April 28 (UPI) -- Saudi Arabia Wednesday denounced the blasts that rocked the diplomatic neighborhood in Damascus followed by clashes between police and gunmen.

The Saudi Press Agency said Crown Prince Abdullah telephoned Syrian President Bashar Assad last night to condemn "the terrorist incident hoping Syria will enjoy security and stability."

"The two Arab leaders also discussed the latest developments in the Middle East region," SPA said.

In Beirut, Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri called for an emergency Arab meeting to "discuss a strategy for ending the violation of Arab security and stability."

"Targeting Syria is tantamount to an attack against us all. The aim of the perpetrators is to undermine Syrian stability and consequently the stability of the whole region since Syria is a pillar of security," Hariri said in a statement.

Syria, which deploys thousands of troops in Lebanon, is the main power broker in its weaker Arab neighbor.

In Tehran, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Asafi denounced the Damascus explosions as "an unacceptable terrorist act which cannot be justified."

Unconfirmed reports said several blasts rocked the diplomatic neighborhood of al-Mazzah in Damascus late Tuesday night.

The blasts were followed by clashes between security forces and masked gunmen armed with rocket-propelled grenade launchers.

Syrian security killed at least two gunmen, while one policeman was wounded. It was also reported that a number of people were wounded.
