BERLIN, April 28 (UPI) -- Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit has spoken out in favor of a tough police response to this year's installment of the city's annual May 1 anarchist riots.
Social Democrat Wowereit told German newspaper Berliner Zeitung that police should not tolerate the violence usually associated with anarchist demonstrations planned for May 1.
May 1 is the day chosen by German anarchists for their most destructive protests and riots to further the cause of anarchy.
Wowereit said police should react more quickly and more decisively to signs of vandalism and should attach themselves to any groups of young people seen in the neighborhood associated with the worst violence.
Anarchist organizers say they are expecting up to 20,000 demonstrators to come to Berlin this year to take part in May 1 demonstrations. They say they are expecting very serious riots.
