ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla., April 27 (UPI) -- The Zephyrhills City Council has voted to change newly named Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue back to its original name, Sixth Avenue.
The dispute began last fall when the council renamed the thoroughfare for the civil rights leader. Petitions against the decision circulated and the council reaffirmed the vote.
But Monday the council took it up again with opponents arguing residents didn't have a voice and the city shouldn't disrupt its numeric street grid just to name a road for King, the St. Petersburg Times reported.
"It's the way I knew it would turn out," said council member Liz Geiger, who voted to keep King's name. "I think the fact that they've taken the name Martin Luther King Jr. away is worse than if they never had it in the first place."
The debate lasted two hours, and as expected, was drawn along racial lines.
