Le Pen shrugs off British egg-throwers

ALTRINCHAM, England, April 26 (UPI) -- The ultra-conservative French politician Jean Marie Le Pen says he's unfazed by protesters who hurled eggs and garbage at him in England.

"I get the same reaction wherever I go," Le Pen said through an interpreter at a news conference in Altrincham.

Le Pen denies there was a holocaust during World War II and also wants to outlaw Islam.

He spent the weekend in England on the invitation of the right-wing British National Party, and returned home Monday, Sky News reported.

Hundreds of anti-racist protesters pelted his car with eggs, rocks and garbage bins as he left a BNP news conference Sunday. The event's location and time was kept secret until one hour beforehand, but protesters were tipped off and converged around the hotel.

Protesters said they were also unhappy with Home Secretary David Blunkett for allowing Le Pen into the country in the first place. Friday, Blunkett issued a statement saying Le Pen was welcome to visit as a citizen of the European Union, but warned he would be arrested if he tried stirring up racist issues.
