GOP Senate race keys Pa. primary

PHILADELPHIA, April 26 (UPI) -- Sen. Arlen Specter has a slim lead over Rep. Pat Toomey in the GOP Senate primary in a poll released Monday, one day ahead of the Pennsylvania primary election.

A Quinnipiac University poll, found 48 percent of respondents favor Specter, who is seeking a fifth term to the U.S. Senate. Toomey is a three-term U.S. congressman and was the choice of 42 percent of respondents. A total of 10 percent of those questioned were undecided.

A total of 617 Pennsylvanians likely to vote Tuesday were contacted April 20-24 for the poll, giving the data a margin of error of 4 percentage points.

Tuesday's primary in Pennsylvania also features candidates for presidents, but those races were locked up long ago, making the Senate race the most attention-grabbing on the ballot.

Toomey has been trying to depict Specter as a liberal. Specter, a moderate among Republicans, has moved to the right during the campaign to counter conservative support for Toomey.

The survivor between Specter and Toomey will face Democrat Joe Hoeffel, another three-term congressman, on Nov. 2 in the general election.
