VIENNA, April 26 (UPI) -- Social Democrat Hans Fischer won Austria's presidency, defeating conservative favorite, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, European media reported.
Fischer, 65, who was the opposition candidate, won 52.1 percent of Sunday's vote, compared to Ferrero-Waldner's 47.9 percent. Ferrero-Waldner said afterwards she would stay on in her current post as the country's foreign minister.
Ferrero-Waldner had the support of the whole Austrian right wing, including the far right Freedom Party of Joerg Haider. Last week, polls showed her slightly ahead of Fischer.
But observers said voters evidently used the election to express their dissatisfaction with the conservative government's handling of key domestic issues, such as the economy.
Fischer, who takes over in July, will be the first Social Democrat president in Austria since 1986. The Austrian head of state's role is largely ceremonial but makes the final decision when there is a political deadlock.
