Toronto turns out to pick up litter

TORONTO, April 25 (UPI) -- Thousands of people in Toronto stuffed trash into yellow garbage bags during the weekend in a 20-minute drive led by the city's mayor.

Some 30,000 people signed up for the 20-minute cleanup on Saturday, filling 160,000 bags, the Toronto Sun said.

"People want their pride back, and it starts with keeping this city clean and then making it beautiful," Mayor David Miller told the Sun. "This is just the first step."

There were 14,000 people signed up for the Sunday cleanup.

The Sun was one of the sponsors of the event, and the newspaper's publisher, Neil Fowler, helped pick up trash near the newspaper's office.

The newspaper said littering has become a problem in the city that once was lauded for its cleanliness.
