Iran warns against attacking Najaf

WASHINGTON, April 22 (UPI) -- Iran's President Mohammad Khatami Thursday warned the United States that an attack on a Shiite holy city in Iraq could lead to a disaster.

"An attack on (the holy city of) Najaf would be equal to committing suicide and would provoke fury within the Shiite world against the U.S.-led coalition," Khatami told reporters after a cabinet session in Tehran.

U.S. forces surrounded Najaf after rebel Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr encamped himself in the city two weeks ago. U.S. authorities believe he is orchestrating attacks on U.S. targets from his hideout in Najaf.

The United States holds the cleric responsible for the deaths of hundreds of Iraqis and dozens of U.S. soldiers and has pledged to capture or kill him.

U.S. military commanders, however, have refrained from attacking the city to capture the cleric, as they fear it could inflame religious sentiments across the Islamic world.

When asked to comment on Khatami's warning, State Department Spokesman Richard Boucher said: "I have no idea why Iran says things, and I'm not going to try to explain them."
