Half of last-year's German grads have jobs

BERLIN, April 19 (UPI) -- Only half of last year's German college graduates managed to find jobs in their field within a year of graduating, a German institute study indicates.

German Federal Education Minister Edelgard Bulmahn announced the results of the study, which was produced by the German Academic Information System, Monday in Berlin.

Despite the study's somewhat pessimistic results, Bulmahn said, "a college education remains the best insurance against unemployment."

While the study showed only half of college graduates fully employed, graduates of technical programs did somewhat better: 80 percent of them had found work in their field a year after graduating.

Even though the college graduates included in the study did not have much success to report in the professional world, 90 percent of them said they were satisfied with the decision to pursue a college education, up 3 percent from a similar study four years ago.

At the same time, college graduates were critical of the abstract nature of their education, with few saying their study had a large enough practical component.
