CHICAGO, April 16 (UPI) -- Chicago school officials plan "appropriate disciplinary action" against a white third grade teacher over a verbal outburst involving a black student.

Black and Latino parents called for removal of the Graham Elementary School teacher who, infuriated by his behavior, referred to an 8-year-old black boy in her class with an obscene racial epithet and threatened to kill him.

But, the school board said the comment, made to a guard, does not warrant the teacher's removal as it was "not within earshot of students," the Chicago Sun-Times said.

The teacher, who has taught at Graham for seven years, had called the guard twice on March 17 to come to her third-floor classroom and remove the child.

Chicago Public Schools spokesman Michael Vaughn said the teacher realized she had made a mistake and apologized to the guard.
