School violence on the rise this year

CLEVELAND, April 16 (UPI) -- Five years after the Columbine school massacre near Denver, school violence seems to be increasing across the nation.

Tuesday will mark the fifth anniversary of Columbine, when two students entered Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., and began shooting. In the end 12 students, a teacher, and the two killers were dead.

National School Safety and School Security Services of Cleveland said Friday violent school-related deaths this school year have jumped to 43, more than the last two school years combined.

Kenneth Trump of the school security firm said the 43 violent deaths in schools this year are more than any other individual school year since before the Columbine shootings.

Trump said he has found more than 60 additional non-fatal shootings and more than 160 other incidents of high-profile violence including stabbings and riots this academic year, which began in August.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has designated four more high schools requiring extra law enforcement officers because they are so unruly.
