MADISON, Wis., April 14 (UPI) -- A 20-year-old University of Wisconsin student who faked her kidnapping two weeks ago has been charged with two counts of obstructing officers.
Audrey Seiler's March 27 disappearance prompted a four-day search and manhunt for a fictitious knife-wielding abductor that cost Madison, Wis., police $96,000.
A 16-page criminal complaint says Seiler lied to police on two occasions, the day she was found in a marshy area south of Madison and during interviews about her disappearance.
Her story fell apart under questioning and on April 2 she admitted she made up the kidnapping because she feared losing her boyfriend.
Seiler was charged with two misdemeanor counts of obstructing officers, which carry a maximum penalty of nine months in jail and a $10,000 fine, WTMJ, Milwaukee, said.
Seiler returned to her hometown of Rockford, Minn., and reportedly is under a doctor's care.
