Poll: Giuliani strongest for N.Y. governor

WASHINGTON, April 14 (UPI) -- A poll released Wednesday shows former Mayor Rudy Giuliani leading the pack of potential 2006 candidates for governor of New York.

An independent Quinnipiac poll of 1,279 registered New York voters shows Giuliani beating state Attorney General Eliot Spitzer and U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer, the two Democrats most often mentioned as 2006 gubernatorial candidates.

Against Schumer, Giuliani leads 56 percent to 36 percent while beating Spitzer by a wider margin, 59 percent to 34 percent.

Both Schumer and Spitzer would defeat incumbent GOP Gov. George Pataki, the poll said. Pataki has yet to announce whether he intends to seek a fourth term.

The survey was conducted between April 5 and April 12 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.7 percent.
