ANCHORAGE, Alaska, April 14 (UPI) -- Former Alaska Senate President Mike Miller announced Wednesday he will challenge U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski in the Aug. 24 Republican primary.

Miller, who recently resigned as the state's commissioner of administration to ponder a Senate run, said Murkowski "isn't conservative enough for Alaskans and risks being defeated" by Democrat Tony Knowles, the former governor.

"I'm better on the issues," he said. "I have a solid conservative voting issue. Lisa Murkowski and Tony Knowles are liberals," Miller told the Anchorage Daily News.

An 18-year veteran of the Alaska Legislature, Miller says he will put up $200,000 of his own money to launch his campaign. Murkowski, who was appointed to the seat in 2003, has raised an estimated $2.3 million while Knowles has banked a reported $1.75 million.
