"The Department of State has been in contact with the families of the seven U.S. civilian citizens missing since Friday," she added.

A CNN report earlier identified the four bodies as those of missing U.S. military contract workers.

The U.S. military said Monday all seven worked for Kellogg Brown and Root, a construction company affiliated with the Halliburton Co.

The military identified one person as Thomas Hamill, a truck driver from Macon, Miss. His captors had threatened to kill and mutilate him unless U.S. troops ended their assault on the city of Fallujah. The deadline passed Sunday with no word about his fate.
