Persian Gulf detainees face discrimination

BAHRAIN, Bahrain, April 13 (UPI) -- Detainees at Guantanamo Bay who come from Persian Gulf states don't get the same legal treatment that detainees from other places get, a lawyer said.

Guantanamo Bay is the Cuban site where U.S. officials hold terror suspects.

Stephen Kenny from Australia, says detainees from Gulf states are being denied equal rights by the U.S. government, which is operating different trial procedures depending on the nationality of inmates, the Gulf Daily News of Bahrain reported Tuesday.

He urged Gulf countries to put pressure on the White House to stop their people being treated as second-class citizens.

"Persons from Bahrain receive lower standards of justice -- the U.S. is saying that countries like Bahrain and Saudi Arabia are second-class citizens," Kenny said Monday.

"In my opinion, there needs to be a lot of pressure put on the U.S. government by Gulf countries to ensure the human rights of citizens are protected."
