Bush says Iraqi sovereignty on schedule

WASHINGTON, April 10 (UPI) -- President Bush, in his Saturday radio address, maintained that despite recent violence, the transfer of Iraqi sovereignty will take place on schedule June 30.

"Some have suggested that we should respond to the recent attacks by delaying Iraqi sovereignty. This is precisely what our enemies want," he said. "Iraqi sovereignty will arrive on June 30th."

However, the president mentioned the transfer of government control would not be the end of U.S. involvement in Iraq. "We will establish a new American embassy to protect our nation's interests. We will continue helping the Iraqi people reconstruct their economy, undermined by decades of dictatorship and corruption. And our coalition forces will remain committed to the security of Iraq," he said.

Bush also said Iraq's permanent government -- scheduled to take power in 2005 -- can count on coalition assistance.
