SACRAMENTO, April 9 (UPI) -- There remained differing opinions Friday as to why a controversial tax initiative to boost California's education funding was pulled from the November ballot.
The California Teachers Association said the proposal that sought to generate $6 billion in revenues through taxes on commercial property would not have been given a fair hearing before the voters due to the already-crowded ballot.
Business leaders and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger opposed the measure as being harmful to jobs and the economy, however, association President Barbara Kerr told the Sacramento Bee Schwarzenegger's stance was not the primary reason the measure was withdrawn.
Kerr said polls show Californians favor improvements in schools and want the business community to pay their fair share.
However, a spokesman for the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association told the Bee a strong anti-tax sentiment exists in the Golden State.
