AUCKLAND, New Zealand, April 8 (UPI) -- A worker at Auckland's Royal Easter Show in New Zealand fell 32 feet off a roller coaster and died Thursday, the New Zealand Herald reported.

The owner of Mahon Amusements, Bill Mahon, was working on the Super Loops roller coaster when the machine apparently had a mechanical failure, safety officials said.

Mahon was taken to Auckland Hospital with head injuries and died several hours later.

Occupational Safety and Health regional manager John Forrest said the man was either thrown or fell off the ride. It was closed down while police and OSH investigators took statements from witnesses.

"He was carrying out maintenance and somehow there was a mechanical failure and he has ended up on the ground," Forrest said.

Showgrounds general manager Mark Frankham says all of their rides conform to OSH standards and are thoroughly checked prior to the show opening.
