TOKYO, April 6 (UPI) -- The head of Japan's Self-Defense Forces called Tuesday for a review of the Japanese role in Iraq, the Kyodo news agency said.
"The dissociation between the expectation and what can be realized is big," Shigeru Ishiba said at a news conference. "The needs are in a sense endless, but the SDF alone cannot respond to all of them."
He said it was important to determine how some 530 Japanese troops can deal with the various Iraqi needs. He said his agency would coordinate with the Foreign Ministry on the issue.
The comments come after some residents of the town of Samwah in Iraq, where SDF troops are stationed, complained their lives have not improved since the force's arrival.
Tokyo is a key U.S. ally in Iraq and its deployment of troops to that country is the first Japanese overseas endeavor since World War II.
